Decoration for Officers in Silver of the 1st version, type for civilian of rank compared to generals, as a seven-pointed star, its rays flanked by a flat ring embossed with acanthus leaves; white enameled centre medallion with the laureated head of Don Joao VI King of Portugal facing right, within border as a green enameled, narrow laurel wreath; above, the crowned coat of arms of Portugal, on top of which is affixed the pivoting, horizontal suspension bar; the reverse with centre medallion bearing the embossed inscription “MONTEVIDEO” within three rosettes above (the central one, larger) and acanthus leaves below, the whole within green enameled laurel wreath. A historically very important and extremely rare decoration, instituted in 1824, to reward signalled merits and commemorate the fierce combats during the overseas’ expeditions of 1816 to 1820, in this case to distinguish the merits of high-ranking civilians; excellent condition and beautiful, dark patina. Collar Chain. Collar Badge, 88x69 mm, gilt Silver, maker's mark "Paul Telge, Berlin", both sides enameled, centre GOLD, cross and the scarf with blue enameled legend "Prin statornicie la isbinda". The Chain, 70 cm, silver gilt, one side enameled, 22 enamelled medallions. The Order of Carol I, the highest Romanian Order, instituted on May 10th, 1906, part of the 40th jubilee celebration of King Carol of Hohenzollern, was awarded until 1932 in 4 classes: Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Officer and Commander. With the introduction of the Order of Loyal Service in 1932, the last two classes of the Order Carol I were closed, but the decorations could be worn until 1947. A superb and very rare collar, in best condition! I RR!

An early, embroidered 1st Class Star, the rays of gold sequines embossed sheet-gold and twisted gold and silver wire; all tips ending with tiny loops to affix the star to the habit; centre medallion made of gold-yellow silk with gold embroidered cross with sheet-silver arms and red silk borders; blue silk outer circlet with gold-embroidered order’s motto “PRO FIDE REGE ET LEGE” (For the Faith, the King and the Law”), the whole within a border of twisted, concentric, gold wires; the reverse backed with strong paper and an ancient, inventory label. An extremely rare piece, dating from the Napoleonic wars, of this important Russian order, descending from the prestigious Polish one, excellent condition. Dia.: 87,0 mm. Provenance: the estate of Field Marshal Mikhail Barclay de Tolly (1761 1818): one of the most popular military leaders of Russia during the wars against Napoleon (besides having distinguished himself also along his military career started at the very young age of 15). Commanding the 1st Army against the advancing, French Grande Armée, he practiced the tactics of the “scorched earth”, then leaving the command to Marshal Kutuzov; Barclay’s military skills made him a hero during the counter attacks and the battles that led to the French retreat, being appointed commander-in-chief of the Russian Armies after the battle of Bautzen. Leading the Russian Forces to the capture of Paris, at the arrival in the French Capital he was honoured with the title and rank of Field Marshal. I RR!

A beautiful, very rare early cross, when 1st class badges were not as large as those made in the 2nd half of 19th Century; with attractive, old patina, excellent, untouched condition. An early 19th Century, 1st Class Breast Star of the Order, with finely chiseled and pierced rays, four of which with gold overlay to the tips; black enameled centre medallion with chiseled cross, flanked by the initials “C”, “P”, “K”, “B”; red enameled outer circlet within double, beaded gold border, with the Order’s motto “ПОЛЬЗА ЧЕСТЬ И СЛАВА” (Benefit Honour and Glory), in finely chiseled and separately applied lettering; gilt, concave reverse, the counter- medallion engraved with jeweler’s name “Beaugeois / Rue de la Paix / N.° 2”. A beautiful star of exceptional, imposing quality, made by one of the most prominent French jewelers, excellent condition. Dia.: 85,0 mm. Provenance: the estate of Gabriel Jean Joseph Molitor (17701849); one of the most capable staff officers in the Napoleonic army since the earliest cam- paigns, he saw his first successes with his brilliant manoeuvers on the Swiss territory, under the higher command of Massena and then Moreau, breaking the Austrian troops at Bregenz and Stockach until reaching the Armée d’Italie; he saw action in Dalmatia, where he displayed courage, intelligence and excellent tactical capabilities, then passed to the Armies in the Netherlands until 1813. On Napoleon’s return from the exile at Elba, he was confirmed as Inspector General of the army and wanted him to place his troops in the Alsace. His being faithful again to Napoleon, was the reason of his being put out of service at the return of Louis XVIII after Waterloo, but soon the Marshal Guyon de St. Cyr called him back, again granting the role of Inspector General. Sent with Army of the Pyrenees, he saw again the action in the Spanish war in 1823, where he brilliantly conducted the campaign, On his return he was created Marshal of France. He reorganized the fortification of Paris, became Governor of the Hotel des Invalides and on his death, he had the honour of being buried in the crypt at the Invalides, His name is inscribed in the Arc de Triomphe. He was appointed Grand Cross of the order of Saint Vladimir in 1824. I RR!

His being faithful again to Napoleon, was the reason of his being put out of service at the return of Louis XVIII after Waterloo, but soon the Marshal Guyon de St. Cyr called him back, again granting the role of Inspector General. Sent with Army of the Pyrenees, he saw again the action in the Spanish war in 1823, where he brilliantly conducted the campaign, On his return he was created Marshal of France. He reorganized the fortification of Paris, became Governor of the Hotel des Invalides and on his death, he had the honour of being buried in the crypt at the Invalides, His name is inscribed in the Arc de Triomphe. He was appointed Grand Cross of the order of Saint Vladimir in 1824. I RR!
