The Supreme Order of Christ
Early Breast Star of the Order, from the beginning of 19th Century, 78 mm, smooth Silver rays of convex type and round tips, the centre with the Order’s cross in Gold, with fine chisel-work under the red, translucent enamel, within a golden outer circlet in the form of a thick laurel wreath, the reverse, fitted with pin. A beautiful, most rare star of the highest order of the Holy See, almost excellent condition and fine, blue-grey patina. I RR!

A complete set of the Order: the badge, 105x56 mm, in gilt Silver and gold-yellow enamel the lower arm, fitted with a separately made spur, with rotating wheel, white enameled centre medallion with gilt, crowned monongram "MA" (representing the Holy Virgin), within faceted outer circlet, white enameled reverse medallion with golden inscription "PIVS X RESTITVIT" and "MCMV", the hinged trophy-of-arms, with chiseled details, the armour`s breast, the trophy`s reverse, with the maker`s escutcheon of Tanfani e Bertarelli, Rome (official purveyors to the Holy See) and the letter "A" (for "Argento", silver), fitted with two sliders to mount the badge to the collar, breast star, 81 mm, with silver, faceted and pierced rays, the centre with the Order`s cross in gilt silver and gold-yellow enamel and a spur with rotating wheel, mounted to the lower arm, polished reverse, also bearing the label of Tanfani e Bertarelli and the " indicating the details made of silver, broad pin and two sidehooks, the collar of the Order in gilt silver, typically divided into sections for wear on the different,
ceremonial habits, the whole in the large, red morocco, fitted case of issue with maker`s signature of Tanfani e Bertarelli, Rome, printed in gold on the inner cushion, the lid, with gold embossed coat of arms of Pope Pius XI. A beautiful set of the second highest order of the Vatican state, scarcely awarded as a special reward for exceptional merits towards the Christianity and to the Holy See.

ORDER OF PIUS IX
Grand Cross Breast Star of Prince size with chiseled and pierced rays of “Austrian” type, 55 mm., Silver, centre in GOLD with blue enameled, 8-pointed star, white enameled centre medallion bearing the Pope’s name “PIVS IX”. Within beaded border, golden outer circlet, bearing the blue enameled motto “VIRTVTI ET MERITO”, within thick, diamond-cut, golden outer border, smooth, polished reverse, fitted with vertical pin.
A most attractive, rare star, from the first half of 19th Century, made in the best Austrian quality, excellent condition. I RR!
Provenance: the Imperial House of Habsburg, the estate of Archduke Joseph Anton Johann Baptist of Habsburg Lorraine (Florence, 1776 – Buda, Hungary, 1847), seventh son of Emperor Leopold II, by decree of his brother, the Emperor Franz II, he became palatine of Hungary at the young age of 19, soon starting an active promotion of culture and politics in the interest of Hungary and its peculiar role within the Danubian monarchy, keeping this role until his death, happened shortly before the revolution set Europe in flames. Along his whole life, he was appreciated and respected throughout the European continent for his clear vision of progress and balance between the monarchies. He origi- nated the Hungarian branch of the Habsburg-Lorraine family.

Order of St. Sylvester and the Golden Spur
Commander’s Cross, 60x55 mm., GOLD, as a four armed cross of Maltese type, flanked by faceted, triangular rays, the arms, curiously not white enameled (recalling the “old” Order of the Golden Spur), but finely pebbled and with polished borders, the lower arm, fitted with a knightly spur with rotating wheel, white enameled centre medallion quith separately-made, embossed image of the saint in gold. Within blue enameled outer circlet bearing the inscription “SANC. SILVESTER – P . M .” in golden lettering, the reverse, finished similarly to the obverse, but white enameled centre medallion bearing the date “MDCCCXlI”, within blue enameled outer circlet inscribed “GREGORIVS . XVI . RESTITVIT”, richly ornamented upper loop with large, grooved ribbon-ring, with original neck ribbon.
A beautiful, perhaps unique piece form the earliest period after the reinstitution of the Order in 1841, excellent execution and condition. I RR!

Order of St. Sylvester and the Golden Spur
An important Commander’s Cross of the Order from the time of the institution, in 1841. Neck Badge, 85x52 mm., white enameled octagonal cross in GOLD, the border with brilliant-cut chiselwork, flanked by en-suite chiselled beams, the lower arm with a downwardly pointing, golden spur with separately-made wheel, blue enameled centre medallion with the bust of the saint in gold, chiselled outer circlet with highly polished inscription “SANC. SILVESTER. PONT MAX.” on finely granulated and patinated ground, the reverse with white enameled cross’s arms with thin, chiselled gold border, flanked by polished, concave rays, blue enameled centre medallion with the date in roman numerals “MDCCCXII” (!), the medallion’s outer circlet with polished inscription “GREGORIUS XVI RESTITUIT” on a finely granulated ground, upper loop chiselled as a downwardly pointing acanthus leaf with hinged, large bulbous, red enameled crown of Imperial type with chiselled details, suspension ring with small eyelet, with original ribbon ring, fitted with a hook of blackened steel to suspend the decoration, original, red morocco case, with gold embossed ornaments on the lid (the inner, fitted compartment, wanting). An outstanding, piece, perhaps the finest specimen ever seen of this Order, most possibly unique with its Imperial crown suspension. I RR!
