Jewelled badge of the Order of reduced size, 30x20 mm, GOLD, completely set of red stones forming the Order’s Cross, centered by a latin cross set with diamonds, the arms, flanked by five diamonds at each end, round, upper loop and small suspension ring, smooth reverse. An attractive, rare, badge of the Order from the early 19th Century, excellent condition.

Breast Star, 80x65 mm., GOLD and Silver, chiseled and pierced rays, white enameled centre medallion bearing the Order’s Cross in gold and enamels with chiseled details, within florally-decorated outer circlet, also made of gold and enamels, on top, the red enameled Sacred Heart, polished reverse, with slightly convex counter-medallion, bearing the maker’s escutcheon of Gustave Wolfers, Bruxelles; vertical pin. An uncommonly beautiful, excellently-made rare star, of a rare maker, from the 2nd half of 19th Century, excellent condition. I RR!

Breast Star 80x65 mm., Silver, chiseled and pierced rays, super- imposed with a further, golden star with polished beams, of a smaller diametre, white enameled centre medallion bearing the Order’s Cross in gold and enamels with chiseled details, within florally-decorated outer circlet, also made of gold and enamels, the whole surrounded by a silver border, chiseled with a stylized pattern of leaves, on top, the red enameled Sacred Heart, gilt, polished reverse, with slightly concave counter-medallion, bearing the maker’s escutcheon of Da Costa, Lisbon, vertical, double pin. Grand Officer Set. Neck Cross of Maltese type with ball finials, 60,5x74 mm., white bordered GOLD, the arms, flanked by a thick, golden oak wreath and, close to the centre, resp. white and blue enameled, oval escutcheons, centre medallion with enameled Order’s cross on white ground, within an outer circlet with five-pointed stars, hinged, upper crown and tapering, grooved ribbon ring and original, silk neck ribbon. Breast Star, 89 mm., with chiseled and pierced rays, white enameled centre medallion with red/white enameled Order’s cross, golden outer circlet with “frosted” finish, enriched by enameled flowers, surrounded by lobed border with diamond-cut chiseled details, smooth reverse, broad, cylindrical countermedallion with maker’s escutcheon of "Kretly, Paris", vertical pin and two side-hooks (the catch, with French mark). A beautiful set of the Order as worn in the 3rd quarter of 19th Century, in the best French manufacture, excellent condition. I RR!

Chiseled, tapering suspension ring, its obverse with a section profusely set with diamonds, with original, neck ribbon. Breast Star, 90,0 mm., GOLD, with chiseled rays, white enameled centre medallion with the order’s cross in gold and red enamel, centered by Christ’s Cross set with tiny diamonds, chisleled and embossed outer circlet, within an outer border in silver as stylized acanthus leaves, set with diamonds, smooth, polished reverse with maker’s escutcheon of Da Costa, Lisbon and vertical pin, this, struck with Portuguese gold marks, in the original dark red morocco presentation case, the lid, with corner of separately-made embossed sheet-gold and the dedication “A SUA EXCELENCIA O CHEFE DE ESTADO ALMIRANTE AMERICO THOMAS A COMUNIDADE PORTUGUESA NO BRASIL POR OCASIÃO DA VISITA OFICIAL”;, black velved, fitted inner compartment and original lapel rosette. Collar of the Order, gilt Silver, composed of 10 green enameled laurel wreaths enriched by a sword with blue enameled blade and chiseled hilt and 10 towers with finely engraved details, large badge of the Order, 75x67 mm., as a five-pointed, white enameled star with ball finials, flanked by a green enameled wreath of oak leaves, white enameled obverse centre medallion bearing a green enameled laurel wreath and an oblique sword with blue enameled blade, night-blue enameled outer circlet with the Order’s motto “Valor Leildade E Merito”, white enameled, reverse centre medallion bearing a stylized, also white enameled open book showing the arms of Portugal to the left and the right “page”, bearing the words “CARTA CONSTITUCIONAL DA MONARQUIA” in golden lettering, between the two upper rays, an accurately chiseled and engraved golden tower, with blue enameled “door and window”, round link-ring to append the badge to the collar. A superb chain in excellent condition and beautiful patina. I

Military Order of the Tower and Sword
An early, embroidered Breast Star of the 1st Type (awarded in the period 1808-1834), 82x80 mm., with elaborate work of silver and gold broderies, paillettes and coloured thread, the arms’ tips, with tiny loops to fasten the star to the habit, the reverse, with ivory paper, in the original, fitted case of issue. An extremely rare star of the highest military order of Portugal, in the even rarer 1st type. In our opinion, this piece can be dated to the period of the Napoleonic wars. This star was published and illustrated in: P.J. Estrela: “Ordens e Condecorações Portuguesas 1793-1824”, page 45, where it was possibly attributed to the workshop of F. Alves Pereira, tailor and embroidered to the Royal Family of Portugal, I RR!

An early Knight’s Badge, 48x40 mm., GOLD, seven-pointed star with blue enameled border, the tips as stylized acorns, flanked by a golden wreath tied by green enameled riband, white enameled inner field, centre medallion in gold, embossed with the laureated bust of King Joao facing right, on polished background within blue enameled outer circlet bearing the golden inscription “JOAO D. G. REG. DE PORT. E. DO BRASIL” and a small rosette, on top, a tower with finely chiseled and engraved details, and on top bewelling suspension bar; the reverse, similar to the obverse, but the centre medallion bearing a sword with blue enameled blade within green enameled laurel wreath tied by blue enameled ribbon, outer circlet also blue enameled, bearing the Order’s motto “VALOR E LEALDADE” in gold lettering and a small ornament, with original, deep-sea-blue silk ribbon. Royal Order of Aviz
An embroidered Star of the Order, 111x87 mm., elaborately made with Silver and Gold wire and sequins, the Order’s cross, made of green-lacquered, silver foil, the “sacred heart”, with red-lacquered, silver foil, the reverse, backed with ivory paper, bearing a German handwritten inscription in Gothic cursive: “Portugieser Orden der S. Bento d’Avis I, Portugal (...?...) getragen von Generalmajor Gustav Friedrich v. Braun” (with corrections from the time, after having attributed the star to the Brazilian Order of Cruzeiro). A very rare, attributed piece, extremely fine condition, besides minor signs of use. I RR! Gustav Friedrich von Braun (Arneburg, Dec. 25th, 1775 – May 28th, 1859) served in the Prussian Army (becoming noble in 1818), then in the British Army, where in 1826, he was asked to join the Imperial Brazilian Army, with the rank of Marechal de Campo, he commanded the Southern Army during the Cisalpine War of 1827, in 1830, he was appointed Military Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, being later dismissed for being a foreigner. General v. Braun returned back to Europe, in 1855 he was confirmed to his rank and pensioned with the rank of Marshal.
