The King Prajadhipok’s (Rama VII) Royal Cypher Medal
A First Class Breast Badge (BE2469-2478 or 1926-35 A.D.), in the form of the Royal cypher in Gold, profusely set with Diamonds; small suspension loop and round, ribbon-ring; with original, ladies’ bow ribbon; in the original, morocco case of issue, with fitted, velvet lined inner compartment with a handwritten note, pinned to the inner cushion; together, a portrait photograph of the Crown Princess of Denmark, wearing the badge. An exceedingly rare badge, awarded to Royal ladies only, excellent quality and condition. Dia.: 29,5 mm. Provenance: Princess Caroline Mathilde of Denmark (1912-1995), was the daughter of Prince Harald of Denmark, the youngest son of Frederik VIII; on 8 September 1933 she married her first cousin Prince Knud, the second son of Christian X. On the accession of Frederik IX in 1947, Knud became Heir Apparent to the Danish throne since the Salic law in force at the time, excluded Frederik IX’s daughters from the succession, and Caro- line Mathilde was therefore Crown Princess. Following a national referendum in March 1953, the succession law was changed to allow the daughters of King Frederik IX the right of succes- sion, his eldest daughter Margarethe (the present Queen Margarethe II) replacing Knud as heir apparent. Knud and Caroline Mathilde received the titles Hereditary Prince and Princess of Denmark. I RR!

Silver Star of slightly oval form with dagger-shaped rays, all profusely set with brilliants; centre medallion in gold embossed with the Sultan’s Mahmud II (17841839) Tughra and inscriptions on polished ground within red enameled outer circlet, also bearing inscriptions in Arabic calligraphy; mirror-polished reverse with convex, round counter-medallion this, bearing a further, oval escutcheon with the Ottoman Imperial coat-of-arms, a mark and the maker’s mark of Ah. Neguib Bey, Cairo (court jewelers to the King of Egypt), fitted with vertical pin. An extraordinary piece of which no further piece is known, besides the already extremely rare collars, as worn by the members of the Imperial family. Probably an until now almost unknown “special class” to be worn with a badge suspended to a sash, destined to the closest members of the Ottoman Imperial family; this piece, in the finest quality, typical of Cairo’s jewelers working to the khedival, then royal family in exile; excellent condition. The Bailey Banks and Biddle eagle. Finely chased Gold in the form of an American eagle facing left with wings spread and down swept. Its head is in a circular laurel wreath highlighted with green leaves. The eye is red enamel. The eagle’s breast has an oval medallion with the motto in a white enamel border which reads Societas Cincinatorum Instituta AD 1783 in the border. The senators present Cincinnatus with a sword with his wife and cottage behind him against a lapis enamel sky. On the verso Cincinnatus is shown with his plow and an angel above and a village. Gold suspension ring attaches to a blue and white silk ribbon with pin. Dim.: 50,0 x 25,0 mm. Extremely rare and superb! I RR! Provenance: A Newport, Rhode Island collection.

An important Commander’s Cross of the Order from the time of the institution, in 1841: White enameled octagonal cross in Gold, the border with brilliant-cut chiselwork, flanked by en-suite chiseled beams; the lower arm with a downwardly pointing, golden spur with separately-made wheel; blue enameled centre medallion with the bust of the saint in gold; chiseled outer circlet with highly polished inscription “SANC. SILVESTER. PONT MAX.” on finely granulated and patinated ground; the reverse with white enameled cross’s arms with thin, chiseled gold border, flanked by polished, concave rays; blue enameled centre medallion with the date in roman numerals “MDCCCXII” (!), the medallion’s outer circlet with polished inscription “GREGORIVS XVI RESTITVIT” on a finely granulated ground; upper loop chiseled as a downwardly pointing acanthus leaf with hinged, large bulbous, red enameled crown of Imperial type with chiseled details; suspension ring with small eyelet; with original ribbon ring, fitted with a hook of blackened steel to suspend the decoration; original, red morocco case, with gold embossed ornaments on the lid (the inner, fitted compartment, wanting).
